Capture

This captured carbon can then either be transported and stored permanently (CCS) or used in other industrial processes as required (CCU).

The technologies involved in the capturing of CO2 in this manner are well understood with many of then having been deployed successfully in recent years.

The main challenge facing carbon capture technologies is scaling up the process to the level required to meet net zero targets. Scottish industry is ready to meet this challenge, which is why the NECCUS Alliance includes many partners from outside the energy sector in heavy industry.
