Scotland is unique in committing political will to what’s known as a just transition. This is an economic concept that underpins the idea that all of society including those who work in or who rely on current carbon intensive industries or products cannot or should not be left disadvantaged as we change.
The desire to achieve this is grounded in the notion that the country can be allowed to prosper, but only in a way that’s environmentally sustainable. A just transition is challenging but in a Net Zero future, industry will be essential – for jobs, for the essentials we will still need in life, for our economy and the wellbeing of the communities built up around these traditional industries.
We support the recommendations of the just transition commission for Scotland.
