DeCarbScotland Conference & Dinner 2024, our second annual conference, took place at Scottish Gas Murrayfield on 1 February 2024. This large-scale event, with almost 200 attendees, set the stage for collaborative talks amongst government and industry decision-makers, and reflected the sector’s critical role in Scotland’s journey to net zero.
The conference featured a line-up of esteemed speakers, including:
We heard from those involved in the large-scale carbon capture, transport and storage projects in Scotland – the Peterhead Carbon Capture Project presented by SSE and collaborators Worley, MHI and Tecnia Reunidas; and the Acorn Transport and Storage project led by Storegga.
And about international projects from Neptune Energy and Capricorn Energy. Morning breakouts enabled discussion of the opportunity in the North Sea (in partnership with Xodus), supply chain and skills, the role of innovation, and the maritime opportunity. The latter discussion has led to the founding of the NECCUS Maritime Opportunity Special Interest Group (if you’re interested in learning more please contact mark.hughes@neccus.co.uk). Afternoon sessions focussed on the techno-economics of the energy transition (in partnership with DNV), permitting and consenting in the UK, and co-location of offshore wind and carbon dioxide storage.
A return to the plenary enabled presentations on policy instruments and funding for project delivery around the world – the EU, USA and UK.
NECCUS members were on show with a number of stands highlighting their expertise; and an exciting addition for members was the introduction of the NECCUS Young Professionals Award – sponsored by ESS Recruit – which aimed to recognise the rising stars who have delivered the three I’s – innovation, impact and initiative.
Against the backdrop of a rapidly evolving decarbonisation landscape, the 2024 conference was particularly significant, hot on the heels UK Government’s announcement of a £20 billion investment for CCS clusters and the launch of its CCUS Vision at the end of 2023.
